 Color ScarvesPrint

To develop reaction skills, depending on the age and skill level of the children involved, we suggest progressing from juggling scarves, balloons, or bean bags as an introduction to throwing and catching skills, and then to various sized foam balls, tennis balls, playground balls, and even medicine balls.  In this first exercise, we're working on both color recognition skills as well as catching skills.  Each child is assigned a different color scarf, and the game begins with all of the children facing the teacher.  The teacher simply tosses the scarves up in the air, one by one, and the children are instructed to run and catch their color scarf before it touches the ground.  An alternative is to have the children face away from the teacher and when the teacher calls out "go," all of the children turn around and the one whose color has been tossed into the air runs forward to catch it.  And, another variation is to have them begin sitting down before moving forwards to catch the color scarf assigned to them.
