It is widely accepted that good balance is the foundation of all successful sports activities. We suggest briefly introducing the principle of balance with a highly visual and interactive demonstration. The goal is to demonstrate that good balance is achieved when a person’s center of gravity is on top of their base or feet. It also demonstrates that loss of balance occurs when the center of gravity moves too far to a person’s right, left, forwards or back.
To make the point visually clear, have the largest child in a group stand with his or her feet together and have one of the smaller children come out and lightly push the shoulder of the larger child to the side (often one or two fingers will work). Then, reverse the roles. Have the small child stand and the larger child try to push them over. However, change one factor. Have the smaller child stand with their feet wide apart and with their knees bent. Immediately the children will learn that a wide base and a low center of gravity result in good balance.
